Cashier: Tim Britain
Greeter/Raffle: Liz
Invocator:  Liz
SCRIBE - Angie Borden
PUBLISHER: Phil Wallingford
Guests: Carey Borden & Heather Faria

A check for $20,000 was presented by Karyn to Heather Faria for the Clubs commitment for the new Education Center for the Pope Memorial SPCA. A big thank you for all the support was expressed.

Announcements:

Karyn- Still looking for a captain for the Friendly Kitchen for April 15th- We have 2 volunteers as helpers- Doug & Nick. A question before the club is do we want to continue to volunteer at the FK? There are the same people doing it each month and it is becoming more challenging. Laurel & Karyn will do it this month but this will be their last commitment. Cady volunteered for May.

Park Cleanup- A sheet went around for volunteers for May 4th. It is a fun day and only will take 1-2 hours to complete providing we get enough volunteers.

Rockin Race is May 8th- If you are unable to volunteer to help or walk/run- please consider donating to this worthy cause.

Birthdays:

Rebecca B- March 27th- She took the day off from work to enjoy the day. Her baby girl is due in 5 weeks but she is feeling good. She will do the Rockin Race- 1 mile so if she could do it……anyone else??? She is in the process of moving from Manchester to Boscawen- She got engaged in November- and had her baby shower last weekend. Other than that, she takes it easy…… She is still working and enjoying it. All in all- She had a good year.

Phil- March 30th- It was a quiet year in Hopkinton. They came home a bit early for his Kathy’s hip replacement surgery which went quite well. She is already doing the cooking as he volunteered but I guess food poisoning and malnutrition wasn’t of interest to her. They traveled to Georgia and Sweden this year. His daughter is still in Sweden enjoying free health care which really isn’t free.

Vince- April 8th- same as his lovely wife! They went to Colebrook with their 14-year-old granddaughter and thoroughly enjoyed it. They never saw so many people in their lives trying to get home. It took 6 ½ hours to get home. It is going on his 22nd year in Rotary come November. Personally, it was a very good year- 3 grandchildren- soon to spend a family vacation in South Carolina. Sept will be 34 years married to Katrina.

This week’s raffle was Moscow Mule drink mix and Maple taffy donated by Angie and won by Jim M.

Happy Dollars:

Shannon- enjoyed the eclipse in Colebrook.

Assembly: Market Days- Much conversation on what we need to do: Do we want a raffle- chuck a duck- Swag- How can we attract people to our booth. We will be sharing it with the Capital City Sunrise Club. A suggestion was to have a captain for 4+ hours that can coordinate volunteers. This will be discussed further with the Club.

SAVE THE DATE: Golf event will be August 22nd at Beaver Meadow in Concord. Dinner will be supplied by Alans of Boscawen.

                        FROM THE PHENIX THEATRE

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Karyn Finkelson
Cashier: Tim Britain
Greeter/Raffle: Warren

Invocator:  PJ: Normally I do not include his invocation but it was very entertaining so here is a small snippet of it: April Fools Day:
In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from the trees. In 1985, Sports Illustrated writer George Plimpton tricked many readers when he ran a made-up article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fastball over 168 mph.
Finally in 1996, Taco bell duped people when it announced it had agreed to purchase the Liberty Bell and intended to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell.

Birthday:

Miss Liz celebrated another year around the sun. It has been moderately good. She did have some medical/sicknesses. Also, she won the fight with her boyfriend leaving her with a black eye (AKA her barn). Liz has been an extinguished member of our Rotary Club since 1990. Thank you for all you do!

This week’s raffle was a bottle of wine and a beach towel donated by PJ and won by Jenna & Lilly

Bob Blood introduced our speaker: Mayor Byron Champlin: 57th Mayor of Concord: He served 10 years on the City Council and is originally from Rhode Island but lived in Concord for the last 40 years. He worked at several businesses including Lincoln Financial. He was named 40 over 40 in 2015 and has been a Business Leader in the Concord Chamber since 2009.

He shared with us a few updates:

City Council has voted in favor of joining with the Community Power Coalition of Concord. The city is in this program but will plan on offering it to Concord consumers. It still needs additional approvals, hopefully by this fall. It will offer a pathway toward sustainability and local control over energy resources.

It was also decided to dip into the reserves to purchase PFAS- free gear (Polyfluoroalkyl substances: a class of chemicals used to make products resistant to water, grease and stains). There has been increasing evidence that those increased levels are leading to cancer in our fire fighters. The City Council approved the $305,000 for new gear that does not contain these chemicals to all our fireman.  Hopefully this also will help recruit new firefighters as an added result.

Mayor Champlin also stated that this year 50% of our City Council members are new.  To help with transition, they have seasoned members reaching out to the newer members.

They are working on the upcoming budget: Sharpening their pencils: Previously they utilized COVID funding for the loss during COVID in the parking fund. They are looking at similar options while not increasing taxes.

They currently have 5 unions within the City: Police Dept (2) Fire Dept (2) and 1 within office staff in the General Services area. These contracts cannot change but they will look at other savings. They are looking at a move for the Police Dept to accommodate the staff- possibly the old Concord Group building. That would depend on costs which they have a committee looking into.

The homeless in the city are also something they are looking at. It is a community within a community.

The last thing mentioned was recreating the Economic Development Committee. This could help take pressure off the residential tax base.

There was a very interesting question and answer period after the presentation.

Michael Dennehy is the co-founder of Dennehy & Bouley LLC. Michael has been a leader in the industry since he entered the political and public policy arena in 1991.

Known as a public affairs advisor to regional and state organizations and corporations, Dennehy served as senior political advisor to Senator John McCain’s 2008 Presidential Campaign. He also served in the role of National Political Director in 2007. Dennehy was one of the earliest members of McCain’s political team serving as the New Hampshire Campaign Manager and the New England Political Director in 1999-2000.

He led several successful advocacy and political campaigns in the region including New Hampshire Governors Craig Benson (2002) and Steve Merrill (1992 and 1994). Previously, he was the Executive Director of the New Hampshire Republican Party, Republican National Committeeman from New Hampshire and served as special assistant to Governor Stephen Merrill, managing political and legislative crises.

Mike gave us a review of the Presidential political arena before Super Tuesday. He explained what a 3rd party ticket could do for the election. Often, it would decrease votes to the incumbent.

Million Mask Challenge

President Tim accepts 20,000 masks from the Rotary Million Mask Challenge, made possible by a generous donation from the Rossi Family Foundation.  (Please note that Tim only doffed his mask while speaking!)

The masks, part of a 1,000,000 mask donation across New England, have been distributed to familiar local organizations with a need for more protective gear.

The story of this effort is one of service and leadership. It is a story about answering the call, working together, and saving lives. It is the story, in short, of Rotary.

Busy Fall Season for our Club

It's been a busy and very fruitful few weeks for the Rotary Club of Concord NH, this Fall as members kicked off the season with the taping of a new TV show at Concord Community TV called "Rotary Today" and hosted by Club President Warren Emley. Folks are invited to watch the monthly program on the News Section (left).

More big news is the Club's annual raffle fundraiser which was held on October 29th. The raffle and event raised more than $30,000 through ticket sales and a silent auction. It was a fun evening with special entertainment provided by some very talented Rotarians and friends.  All proceeds are used to support local organizations serving the needy in our community or otherwise improving the fabric of civic and community life, for the benefit of all the citizens.

Salvation Army
Captain Starkey has been 3 years in Concord and 25 years in the Army.  He spoke of his life in the Salvation Army.  In 2018, they had 9 kettles which raised $105,000, all of which goes to Concord needy.  He is hopeful for 2019.  The Salvation Army manages 42 bed shelters, which includes case management and also the distribution of toys to 360 children for Christmas.  Their challenges for 2019 are (a) the need for more volunteers for each of the kettle sites, which helps them offset having their own employees work the kettles.  Such employees require typical hourly pay and (b) difficulty finding employees in this economy.   He encouraged the group here today, to help the Salvation Army expand their volunteer base and also use personal networking to ask our email friends to support our days of bell ringing.

SONG

Warren led all in the singing and jumping up from their seats with the poster boards and generally having a joyous time, celebrating and singing the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Rotary – “IT guy”
Phil offered a tutorial on Club Runner so that members can access quite a bit of information. He spoke of (a) access and resetting their password (b) access to club membership – roster and contact information on members (c) access to club documents (d) use of the Message Center for individual or group emails.
Tim Britain
Rotary – Board member – the legal guy
Tim addressed the proposal to offer an alternative membership category – Corporate membership (and Family membership).  The concept is that a business joins the Club with a lead member and designated alternate members – this to accommodate a company’s desire to have involvement with Rotary and accommodate lead member’s inability to come to meetings.  The company would complete the normal application and the company, lead members and alternate members would be vetted by the Membership Committee.  All three could come to the meetings; only one will be counted toward membership numbers.  Attendance would be recorded under the name of the lead member.  The Corporate member will have one vote, not multiple.  Tim indicated that RI has approved this concept and other clubs have adopted this (although with relatively few corporate members).  To allow this, some changes are required to the Club Constitution.  Comments:  (a) concept was tried earlier and never got off the ground and (b) what is the likelihood that actual current members will convert to Corporate Membership – tbd and (c) family membership was also addressed.
Mary Lynn Rahlson
Rotary -  Treasurer – the money gal
ML noted that revenues for lunch were $9,200, more than expenses on same, $7,000.  Attendance has averaged 30 members.  Arell Funds are satisfactory, with a 7% return.   Total about $1.8 million

Rotary Year in Review

Our Rotary year spans from July to June.  Here are highlights of our most recent year (ending June 30, 2018).

 Scholarships

In the past Rotary year $46,000 was awarded in scholarships to students attending technical schools, colleges and universities.

These scholarships were made possible by a gift from Noah and Evelyn Arell, which resulted in creation of the Arell Scholarship Fund endowment, upon the death of Evelyn in 2007 (her husband Noah predeceased her) This endowment will provide funds for scholarships in perpetuity.

Community Support

Community Support Awards totaled $31,425. These awards are given from the money we raised each year through the Golf Tournament, Major Raffle and other volunteer fundraising activities.

These awards went for youth camperships, youth and elderly programs, youth music & arts, and other civic and community programs. Guidelines for requesting donations can be found here on the website.

Special Board Donations for Community Support

The Arell gift noted above also resulted in creation of the Arell Community Support Fund endowment. This allows the Club, through member support and Board approval, to award larger requests that meet the needs in our community.

Last year these Special Community Support Awards totaled $140,000 to the Veterans Heritage Learning Center - NH Veterans Cemetery Association in Boscawen, the winter shelter project at the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness and the Capital Center for the Arts which plans to develop a new theatre on Main Street.

Concord Student Wins District 4-Way Speech Contest

We hold a 4 Way Test Speech Contest in the spring of each Rotary year.   This past year Skylar Mathews, a senior at Concord High, won first place from among more than 20 competitors at our local club contest to earn the $500 prize. Skylar went  all the way to the District Conference in Burlington, VT, from a series of qualifying contests, and won the grand prize for an additional $650!

This experience helps young people gain confidence with public speaking.   We have had high school students from Home Schoolers, Concord High, Bishop Brady High, Concord Christian, Merrimack Valley High and Pembroke Academy participate in the contest.

Parks Clean Up

Our Club maintains three parks in the Concord area, one at Sewalls Falls, one at Makee Square and the other at the corner of Main and Loudon Road.  With the motto “many hands make light work” the Club members even have fun cleaning up!

Friendly Kitchen

The Rotary Club of Concord has been a strong supporter of the Friendly Kitchen for the past several years. We serve one dinner every month and serve in the breakfast rotation in the cold winter months. Again, this service provides for more fun for the members of this active club.

18th Annual Golf Tournament

"Pembroke Pines Country Club is hands down one of the best Public Access Golf Courses in the region"

The Club held another successful tournament this year, in spite of a few drops of rain.  This is a major fund raiser for us with all the proceeds benefiting local scholarship recipients and organizations serving the needy among us.

Our thanks to all the sponsors, led by Merrimack County Savings Bank, NHTI, Unitil, Rumford Stone and Orr & Reno.  To Alan's of Boscawen who once again provided (and donated!) a great lunch.

And a special thanks to all who participated as golfers or volunteers.  See you next year.

A Great Big WOW Thank You

Posted by Jerry Madden
Congratulations and thank you to Simon Keeling, the WOW committee and all the volunteers that made WOW a success. Over 6000 duck tickets were sold and 8 Dragon Boat teams competed this year. Although Ruth Coneys' team did not live up to all the pre-game hype, the all female crew had a great time on the water. Countless hours were put in organizing the many activities throughout the weekend. Thank you to everyone involved - it was a real Rotary team effort.
